This is a 2.5 inch memory foam mattress that has pillow bolsters in the sides and back that would work for your dog to either lean against or use as a head rest. Polyfill material is in the bolsters so they are not super firm.

The removable machine washable cover helps maintain cleanliness and sanitation. A smooth surface material might be cooler and easier to clean. There is a water resistant liner to protect the memory foam from pee, or drool.

Multiple size options help you get the right match for your dog, though it does not come in an extra small or toy size.

Non-skid nobs on the bottom will help reduce the chance that the bed will slip out from under your dog when they’re trying to get up. This is an important feature for dogs with arthritis or joint injuries that may be dealing with some muscle weakness or incoordination.

The company boasts a 2 years warranty on defective product issues. It’s always a good idea to look at the detail, but the longer the warranty often means the more solid the manufacturing is.

what we like What we like:

  • All the components come out to make cleaning easier
  • Seems to be comfortable and durable for big dogs.
  • For dog’s that like to lean, the sides increase comfort.

what we dotn like What we don’t like:

  • Getting the foam inside the casing can be difficult.
  • Cover material may wear quickly for dogs that paw at it a lot.

The Woof on the Street...!

One happy customer felt this was just the ticket but follow the directions.

“I have an 80 lb lab mix who absolutely loves this bed – as soon as I got the foam cushion in and put it on the floor, he trotted right over and laid down. Very simple to put together, I definitely recommend following the suggestion on the directions and putting the foam cushion in right away before it has a chance to fully inflate. The cover fits snug around the cushion and “head rests”, so there is little chance for snagging/tearing on the dog’s nails”

Some owners found the cover was not strong enough to stand up to diggers.

“Most dog, and specially my dog, every time that uses the bed, tries to soften the area that she lays down by scratching her paws over the COVER MATERIAL , for a few minutes , and then lays down. and by doing so she eventually going to tear up the COVER MATERIAL. not sure if i am explaining myself to the point or not. Bottom line, I WISHED THE COVER WAS MUCH STURDIER THAN WHAT IT IS NOW.”

This bed is a 3 inch memory foam mattress with a support layer on the bottom and a gel layer on the top to dissipate heat. This feature is very high on my list of comfort factors for bigger dogs that tend to get hot.

The cover can be removed and washed to keep things sanitary, which is important for incontinent dogs. A water resistant liner to protect the memory foam which is the core of what you pay for. You can also add a crib sheet inside the cover like we discussed above.

The company promotes a 1 year satisfaction guarantee, so look into the details of that, especially if you’ve been dissatisfied with beds in the past. There are often details on which parts are covered for which length of time.

This bed does not have bolsters on the side which is better or not depending on your dog’s preference. This could work better for dogs that like to stretch in every direction. For dogs that like to have something to lean against this bed may not be as comfortable or you could add a pillow to it.

what we like What we like:

  • Great customer support seems to be the norm.
  • Thin enough to use as a crate mat.
  • The cooling layer can really help with comfort.

what we dotn like What we don’t like:

  • Not expanding to the full 3 inches happens with some frequency.

The Woof on the Street...!

the woof on the street

This customer felt the support was great for her dog.

“Excellent bed. I thought at first it looked sort of thin but it does not really sink and is very supportive. My 75 lb german shepherd would rather lay on this half the time than sleep with me on my bed!”

Many uses feel it’s just not for the big dogs

“I have a small dog and 2 large breed dogs, this does not work for the big dogs, it is too thin. it is almost 3 inches think but when they lay on it, it hits the ground. I think I need at least 6-8 inches so they can’t feel the hard floor under it. HOWEVER, the small dog loves it. So in my opinion, this is not thick enough for large dogs.”

This bed has a bolster design all the way around the bed, with a small dip in the front for getting in. This makes it important to take note of the internal dimensions when sizing it for your dog. The bosters do take up a lot of space. The bolsters are a soft stuffed cotton so not particularly supportive, but would be great for a dog that likes to lean or cuddle a bit.

The cover is one piece and removable for washing. There is an inside waterproof liner to protect the memory foam mattress which really matters for longevity.
The bed is 6 inches high with the edges but the mattress is only 2 inches, so it may not be enough support for really big dogs, but great for a smaller dog that wants to be surrounded by soft pillows.

The bottom is non-slip to help your dog’s stability getting out. This is important for dogs with weakness or a tendency to have their legs slide out from under them.

A plushy surface may be soft and comfortable for some dogs, but too hot for others. Do you have a snuggler(curled up in a ball) or a stretcher(legs everywhere)? It’s important to remember, there may be a perfect bed for your dog, but no single bed is perfect for every dog.

what we like What we like:

  • Very easy to clean.
  • Comfy edges for dog’s that like a head rest or something to lean on.
  • Protects well against pee accidents.

what we dotn like What we don’t like:

  • For dogs that paw a lot the fluffy stuff comes off easily.
  • The overall height can be confusing as to how thin of a mattress this is.

The Woof on the Street...!

the woof on the street

A customer with a golden that likes to snuggle found her dog to be pretty happy.

“I’d been eyeing off orthopedic beds for a while now and this one had good reviews and also had the surrounding cushions I knew she’d love to rest her head on. From the second I opened the packaging and put the mattress into the zipped casing, she was in it. Admittedly, she was trying to drag it around at first thinking it was a really big play thing for her but once she sat in it, I couldn’t get her out.”

Some owners found that getting it together was really difficult and the foam smell too much.

“I really want to like this bed but I had a horrible time inserting the foam pad unto the bottom. It was so much of a struggle that I ripped part of the seam by the zipper. My recommendation is they change the design so the zipper is on one of the longer sides OR add a second zipper on the other narrow end so once you’ve inserted the foam partway, you can unzip the opposite end and pull the pad the rest of the way. I would hate to have to remove that pad now for any reason and hope I wont have to. There was also a slight off putting smell for the first couple of hours. We’ll see how it holds up long term…”

This bed comes in a lot of different materials, styles and designs so be careful what you order. You should select the style you are interested in and read the description closely. If you need a different size be sure it didn’t change styles.
The ‘orthopedic’ bed is 4 inches of the egg crate foam style which does not provide firm support. This foam collapses easily and doesn’t support the body as well. It also provides less relief for pressure points. A three side bolster design is offered by this dog bed for some cuddle comfort. Be sure to check inside dimensions to know your dog will fit.

This bed has a lot of color and design options if fitting into the décor is a concern. Not many of the beds have this type of design choice.
The cover is a smooth chenille style material which is soft and may be comforting to dogs that get cold. Being removable, the cover for washing helps keep things sanitary.

This bed does not carry a waterproof liner which means you would definitely need to add something for droolers or incontinent dogs. Moisture will ruin the foam much more quickly than just regular use of sleeping on it.

what we like What we like:

  • Easy washing of the cover.
  • A large range of color choices.
  • Jumbo size for really big dogs.

what we dotn like What we don’t like:

  • Cheaper egg crate design does not provide good support
  • No waterproof liner means a short life span for the foam.

The Woof on the Street...!

the woof on the street

Big enough for the big pups.

“I have a hard time finding reviews on products from Great Dane owners. Owning a giant breed dog is very different from a normal sized dog, because everything is significantly more expensive and harder to find. This bed is large enough for my giant dog, comfy enough for his picky tastes, and half the price of similar beds. I actually shared this bed on my Facebook for other pet owners, and would highly recommend it for anyone with a giant dog.”

Not the best for pain issues.

“The foam of the bed is only an inch or two thick. When I step on it on my way into my own bed I easily feel the ground, which means so does my dog when he lays on it. The foam inside the bed is the bumpy eggshell kind. This is not a true orthopedic bed and if your dog has any joint issues, this bed would not support them. However, dog beds are drastically overpriced, especially for large and giant breeds. If you are an average person looking for a decent dog bed for a dog with no joint issues, this is a good price and okay bed”

There is 3 inches of foam in this mattress until you get to the jumbo which is a 4 inch mattress. The egg crate mattress design is not good firm support especially for really heavy dogs. There are multiple mattress types on the same listing which get confusing. Be careful to really go through the details of the specific item you select.

Bolsters on three sides are a comfort factor for more cuddly dogs or dogs that like to lean. This can make a dog feel safer and more relaxed leading to better sleep.

Easy washing with a fully removable cover design helps keep things clean. Older dogs are more likely to have pee accidents which makes this a really important feature.

There are a large number of cover colors and styles. The cute couch style design that might look really nice in the house. This is a good consideration if you are looking for a decor item.

what we like What we like:

  • Easy cover removal for washing.
  • Large range of design styles.
  • Big enough for the biggest dogs.

what we dotn like What we don’t like:

  • Poor orthopedic support with egg crate foam.

The Woof on the Street...!

the woof on the street

One of the biggest on the market.

“My 85 lb labrador mix is comfy as can be on the Jumbo size. I was pleasantly surprised at how big this bed actually is, – bigger than the XL beds I have seen elsewhere.”

Some confusion on the mattress selection leads to frustration.

“This is another product that’s OK, but I’m extremely suspicious of how & why it got so many rave reviews. The description & reviews make you start to envision it’s some wonderful, high-tech & normally expensive cushioning system like a Tempurpedic mattress, all for a low price.”

A 3 ½ inch orthopedic foam base is the mattress for this bed. This is going to provide a good amount of support for medium to big dogs. Full wrap around bolsters really might please a dog that feels better cuddled up. Be sure to check the inner size dimensions for the right fit for your dog.

The cover is an attractive quilted design which may be better for home décor. The fully removable washable cover helps to keep a sanitary sleeping spot. The absence of a waterproof cover for the mattress means this would not be a good choice for dogs likely to have pee accidents or heavy droolers. The additional option would be to add a crib sheet under the cover to protect the mattress.

Bottom has a non-slip design that can really matter for dogs with joint pain so it doesn’t slide while they are standing up. Some older dogs or dogs with injuries don’t have as much muscle control as they used to and standing up is often a time that they slip or slide.

what we like What we like:

  • Wrap around bolster for snuggling.
  • Attractive quilted design.
  • Easy to wash and put back together.

what we dotn like What we don’t like:

  • No waterproof liner.

The Woof on the Street...!

the woof on the street

Comfort design for a big snuggler.

“Lancer loves his bed! I had trouble finding a bed to fit a large german shepherd but this one is definitely large enough and he loves to snuggle into the bumpers. He kept trying to get on the couch so we had to find something that was more comfortable than the couch to deter him and this does it. Good quality as well”

The bolsters are soft, not designed for support.

“This bed has a lot of potential and the base is great. It takes a while to puff up to its full potential but I found the bolster part totally inadequate. It needs three times the amount of stuffing that is in the bolster for it to maintain its shape. So if your dog wants to curl up on the base, you are fine but if it wants to put its head on the bolster . . .get some stuffing”

This dog bed has a four inch mattress with no bolster sides. The mattress is a combination of two inches of memory foam and two inches of high density foam. The flat design may work better for dogs that like to stretch out. The non-skid bottom is a big help for dogs with joint issues so the bed doesn’t slide when they get out of it. It’s important to keep in mind the difficulties standing that older dogs tend to have.

The Sherpa top will make a nice soft surface against your dog’s skin and may be a great comfort factor for you dog. A machine washable cover is important for long term sanitation, especially when dealing with incontinence which is a common issue in older dogs.

There is a customer satisfaction guarantee that can be really useful if it doesn’t work for you be sure to read the details of how it works. Make sure to know the details of what parts are covered and for how long it you want to take full advantage of a warranty.

what we like What we like:

  • A simple design with a lower price point.
  • Can be used as a crate mat for surgical recovery.
  • A heavier bed so less likely to get dragged around the house.

what we dotn like What we don’t like:

  • The cover doesn’t stand up well to washing.

The Woof on the Street...!

the woof on the street

The right comfort and utility.

“I purchased 2 of these with the sherpa top for my 2 Dobermans. Thankfully neither chew but prefer lounging comfortably. These are by far the best dog bed purchase I’ve ever made. They are easily 5 inches in thickness & the xlarge size accommodates each dog fully stretched out. The cover is removable & washable on cold water setting, dries well on low heat without shrinking & retains its original shape. Zipper makes for easy on & off.”

For some pets, the cover just doesn’t stand up.

“The sheer, thin, pitiful fabric has given away at the seams. My dog is not destructive and only sleeps on this bed at night, yet just her lying on it, even with a blanket over the cover, has pulled the seams apart. I am already shopping for a new one, just months from getting this one. Really not a good buy for six months use, despite how cheap it is.”

At a lower price range this is an excellent choice and close runner up to the top pick. Also note, the waterproof liner comes standard. This is a big bed and a good value overall.

This bed has a 7 inch memory foam mattress with an additional 3 inch pillow on one side, 3 of the sides are open. This bed is big, so be sure it will fit in the area you have for it. It will provide a lot of support for a large to extra large dog. This is a nice bolster set up for a dog that likes to stretch out their legs but have their back up against something.

Non-skid bottom decreases the chance of the bed sliding when your dog is trying to get up, a big concern with dogs that have orthopedic issues or muscle weakness. Slipping can cause additional injury or pain.

The micro-suede style cover can be easier to clean than some of the plush covers. A washable cover helps with day to day cleaning. The waterproof inner liner to protect the memory foam is important for long term cleanliness.

what we like What we like:

  • Good orthopedic support without being too hard for the big dogs.
  • It’s a good size for large and giant dogs.
  • The one side pillow leave the dog plenty of stretch room, but also something to lean on.

what we dotn like What we don’t like:

  • Cover tends to break down with dogs that paw a lot.

The Woof on the Street...!

the woof on the street

The perfect orthopedic support for this senior dog.

“I think it’s just the right amount of supportive and soft without being too soft. I am a one hundred and forty pound human, on the day we received the bed, I sat and laid on it and I couldn’t feel the floor at all. It’s so supportive without being overly firm and stiff that I kind of wish there was a human version. Lefty loves it, he’s completely passed out on his bed as I write this.”

Some customers are not getting the durability they expect.

“I have a VERY mixed review of this item. My 120 lb puppy likes laying on the bed; it’s firm and supportive. It also has a liner that protects the foam mattress in addition to the removable cover. That’s the good. The bad is that the baffle/pillow never fully filled out (I did contact the seller and they told me it took a bit longer, but two months later, it’s still only partially inflated). The anti-slip bottom consists of tiny, round rubber discs that come off in every wash. So, with every washing, I’m cleaning these out of my washer/dryer and off the cover. Given that I wash it frequently, it’s a bit of a headache. I’m sticking with it because these things are expensive, but I won’t be buying it again.”

This bed has a 4 inch mattress with 2 inches of high density foam and 2 inches of memory foam. This should provide some top softness and prevent any sinking to the floor. This foam combination is going to give good support to heavy dogs. This is a flat mattress without side bolsters. For some big dogs heat retention might be a concern.

A washable velour cover will help manage day to day cleanliness. There is a mattress liner that the company promotes to be 100% waterproof (wash correctly as noted above.) This is a great feature for incontient or heavy drooling dogs.

The slip resistant bottom decreases the chance of the bed sliding while an arthritic dog is trying to get up. This is a factor worth considering to prevent further pain and injury for your dog. It’s importance in your home depends on what sort of surface the bed will be on such as wood or carpet.

This product comes in more than average number of color/pattern options on the cover is nice for managing décor. That makes this a good support mattress with the opportunity to have a little flair for design in your living space.

what we like What we like:

  • The waterproof liner is highly effective.
  • Durable for big dogs, doesn’t flatten.
  • Room for big dogs that like to stretch out.

What we didn’t like about it:

  • The cover doesn’t stand up to dogs that paw at it.

The Woof on the Street...!

the woof on the street

Some folks found this to be highly durable.

“This bed is over two years old, ordered October of ’15 according to our order history. It’s stood up to two years of my girl hiding her toys under it then flipping it like a table to “surprise” herself. She grabs the corners and drags it to where she wants to curl up if we don’t read her mind and put it in just the right spot. It’s her go-to spot instead of barking her head off when someone comes to the door (or rudely walks on the public sidewalk in front of the house), so it gets stomped, bounced and wiggled upon regularly, the latter because she gets her good-girl treat for alerting us without being obnoxious.”

If only the cover could be replaced.

“I have had this bed for my 55 lb golden retriever for about a year and a half now and it has held up beautifully. He sleeps on it every night. I have been able to wash the cover a few times when needed with no problem at all. My only complaint is that the cover to the bed recently ripped right in the middle of the top. I have searched all over amazon and unfortunately there is no way to just replace the cover. I will have to purchase and entirely new bed. I would gladly give 5 stars if the company sold replacement covers.”

This is a 7 inch mattress with a sandwich of comfort foam 2 inches top and bottom with 3 inches of memory foam in the middle. This creates a lot of support for very heavy dogs. One side has a 4 inch contoured foam pillow for dogs that like a head rest. It also gives it a stylish chaise appearance. An open cell foam designed for cooling which can be very important for large and giant dog’s comfort. This is a huge bonus for dogs that are always laying on concrete or the hard floor to cool off. This is essentially designed for big, heavy dogs, this may even seem hard to a small dog.

A 10 year warranty (foam only) guarantees that the foam will retain its shape or your money back. That’s a big warranty in this industry and speaks strongly to the quality.

The machine washable microfiber cover helps with regular cleaning. No waterproof layer comes standard so not a good solution for dogs with accidents. You can buy one as an add on, but there is an additional cost. I would recommend it, or have another plan for a liner.

what we like What we like:

  • A lot of support padding for very big dogs.
  • Easy clean surface and cover.
  • A strong warranty on the foam.

what we dotn like What we don’t like:

  • The lack of a waterproof layer means this would not work for incontinent dogs without an extra purchase.

The Woof on the Street...!

the woof on the street

This customer is finding thumbs up on durability.

“I have had this dog bed for a year now, and it is still wonderful. It is my 12-year-old lab’s favorite place to spend her time. It is so easy to clean. I’ve really only needed to vacuum it and wipe it with a damp cloth. Haven’t even had to take the cover off. The bed is still in good shape and just as perky as the first night she slept on it. I really think it helps her to get a good night sleep and get up in the morning with fewer aches and pain than she would have otherwise. She is also less grumpy at bed time than she was before we got the bed. I usually sit with her on it for a few minutes before she goes to sleep now, and we have some quality time while I talk to her and pet her before bed. I hate to see my little girl getting older, but I am happy to be able to spoil her in her senior years. This bed is so worth it!”

Extra for a liner?

I think what sets this dog bed apart from others is the foam that is used. The claim that it won’t flatten with age is likely true, as it’s very dense and my 70 pound dogs barely put a dent in it. I purchased two of these – one for each of my dogs (one of which has recently had TPLO surgery). However, I’m not as crazy about this dog bed as I thought I’d be given the amount of 5 star reviews. The main reason is because the waterproof interior liner is not standard – you have to pay around $70 for it. For a dog bed that is already extremely expensive, it seems a big “nickel and diming” to charge an additional $70 for a waterproof liner.”

This bed has a 3 inch orthopedic foam mattress with a half hood that would be great for dogs that like to be covered, snuggle or get cold easily. There is a plastic wire that hold the hood up or you can take it out to use the top as a blanket. Egg crate style foam is really only for small dogs, it does not provide good orthopedic support for bigger dogs.

The soft faux lamb’s wool liner would be great for snuggle type dogs but not necessarily the best for dogs that get hot or dig a lot. A zip off cover can be washed for general cleanliness. This bed has a better color selection than most products so for a smaller dog it would be great to fitting into a home decor.

Overall this bed is loaded with snuggle features so it’s a great option for small dogs that need something soft that they can burrow into and be covered.

what we like What we like:

  • Some nice features such as the hood/top blanket and deep soft cover for small snuggly dogs.
  • Helps with dog’s that tend to get cold.
  • A washable cover helps keep things clean.

what we dotn like What we don’t like:

  • Poor support foam for orthopedic patients.
  • The plastic pipe that holds the top open is not high quality.

The Woof on the Street...!

A happy snuggler.

“ My bully absolutely loves this bed. I didn’t think he’d figure out how to snuggle under the cover.. but he did and never wants to come out. Super soft, well padded, and easy to wash. Overall, a wonderful bed, and great price. Extremely happy.”

Some quality issues.

“My puppy likes his bed, but I found that the plastic tube that is supposed to keep the blanket up does not do it’s job right. It’ll stay up for a hot minute before it slowly lowers. It also kept sticking out from the bottom no matter how many times I closed it (maybe others should stitch it?) and before I knew it my puppy had taken it out. I threw it out and have to tuck him in, which contradicts why I bought this bed. It’s still a good size for a cocker spaniel, and incredibly soft! He slept on it well last night. Just wish it would have functioned properly.”

This bed has a shredded memory foam fill, this might be nice for dogs that burrow a bit. It is a softer feel than solid memory foam so might be better for little dogs also.T he shredded fill design may provide better relief of pressure points for angular, bony dogs. The shredded fill may not provide the type of full body support that a large or extra large dog needs. This is a flat bed with no sides so not as great for snuggle dogs, but good for the stretchers. This dog bed has a 5 inch bed height so it might be hard for some little dogs to step into if they have pain issues.

A waterproof cover that can be removed and washed helps keep things sanitary and protects the filling. This is really important with shredded foam because you can’t take it out and clean it. A 1 year satisfaction guarantee is offered by the company. Be sure to know the details if using the guarantee is important to you.

what we like What we like:

  • Waterproof cover improves cleanliness.
  • The fill keeps its support over time.

what we dotn like What we don’t like:

  • The degree of stuffing it takes to make it stay in place may make is seem too hard to some dogs.

The Woof on the Street...!

Helps an old pup keep going.

“This bed is AMAZING if you have an older dog with “bone” problems. Our dog, Otis, who will be 13 in December (a 100 pound black lab) is still a happy boy who loves his food and still loves playing with his toys. However, the poor thing has major back, neck and leg problems and can not function the way he used to. The old bed he had was soft and would slide all over the floor when he tried to get up and it was getting to the point that he could NOT get up anymore and we would have to help him. This new bed is fantastic for him! It’s a firm bed, which seems to be helping with his problems and it stays in place. We have not had to help him get up once since we got it”

An unusual problem.

“Good size and thickness for the price. My dog is a German shepherd mix that is about 65 pounds and she can stretch out on it without hanging off. However, the cover and filling make this bed super loud when they move around. Not a good bed for a room where anyone else besides the dog will be sleeping.”

A no skid bottom helps prevent sliding which can be really important for dogs that have trouble getting up. If the bed will be on carpet it’s not as important but it will matter on slick flooring like wood or tile. Older dogs or dogs with previous injuries often times will have some trouble standing and a fall could cause them a lot of pain.

what we like What we like:

  • Nice side support for dogs that like to lean or rest their head.
  • Thick mattress that can support a large dog.
  • Removable cover for easy cleaning.
what we dotn like What we don’t like:
  • The external measurements are misleading because of the bolster as to how much room your dog will have.

We don’t always know what they’ll do, but as long as they’re happy.

“Our 10 year old lab LOVES this bed. She seems to be sleeping better (and sleeping more lol) good quality memory foam. I bought her the jumbo since she normally lays on her side stretched out, but for some reason she curls up on this bed so there’s room for another 85lb lab. As long as she’s happy I’m happy”

This dog bed is great except for the zipper.

it is very low quality and is not strong enough to hold the bed material inside the bed. I unzipped the cover as soon as I received this bed in the mail and the zipper broke immedietly. I am currently in the process of returning the bed because there is no obvious way to return just the cover which is also a big pain in the butt as it would be much easier to just ship the cover back for a replacement. Instead I am having to return the whole product just to purchase again once my refund is processed.

This bed has a 4 inch gel infused memory foam for good orthopedic support and to help with cooling, especially for big dogs. This would be a strong consideration for dogs that are chronically hot. There are no sides so it’s not designed for the snuggly, cuddly pups but good for those long legged dogs that want to stretch. This could be a really great bed for dogs that have incontinence issues, like to stretch out and get too hot on other beds.

A waterproof internal cover to protect the memory foam is important for sanitation as well as protecting your investment in the mattress. The bed has a 3 cover system composed of an iInternal waterproof cover a denim outer cover and a microsuede final outer cover.

The no-skid bottom helps to prevent injuries from the bed slipping out from under your dog when they get up. This is especially important if the bed is going to be on a slick floor surface like wood or tile.

  • Triple cover system offers better durability and cleanliness.
  • High-grade gel foam helps with cooling for big dogs.
  • Foam doesn’t compress over time for dogs with average sleep patterns.

what we dotn like What we don’t like:

Comfortable and long-lasting.

“I purchased this bed for my 110lb Lab/Dane mix in Dec of 2015. It is over 1 yr later and I am still certain this is THE BEST money I’ve ever spent on a pet bed. I wanted to wait and see how the bed faired with almost constant pressure for an extended period before giving my thoughts.”

Some consumers felt the waterproof lining was not very good.

“The 4 inch thick memory foam pad offers real comfort and support for your dog. The heavy denim cover has a thin plastic cover underneath that is advertised as waterproof. Not so. My dog had an “accident” that soaked the denim cover then penetrated the plastic cover getting through to the memory foam. The covers were easily washable but the soaked foam was difficult to clean. It took two days in the sun to dry out.”

This bed is a shag rug style design that zips open on the bottom for the padding to come out. About 1.5 inches of memory foam is used so it may not be enough for really big dogs with sore joints. It has a really attractive throw rug appearance so if you have a dog that needs a little support and comfort this could be a cute addition. The thickness of the pad is not going to be enough to provide pain relief to large and giant breed dogs with serious joint issues.

If you are looking for something unique for your dog bed purchase this could be a fun and effective choice.

The cover is washable for cleanliness. A water resistant cover over the memory foam to help protect your investment. This is important both because of pee accidents in older dogs as well as keeping your living space clean and comfortable.

  • A unique style that can blend with décor.

  • Cover really stands up to washing.

A big happy camper.

Very pleased that the thick foam insert is still holding up, though it’s only been 2 months, but all prior dog beds’ foam lost their density after just a couple of weeks! It also looks very nice and luxurious. The “fur” has gotten slightly matted but a brushing or gentle washing is expected to refresh the appearance. My dog is 140 pounds and the XXL fits her raised bed nicely. I would recommend this for previously disappointed bed buyers!”

Maybe durability isn’t its thing.

“I like the shape and size. Problem was that the fur comes off extremely easy by itself and really bad when my pup start scratching it before laying on it. There’s fur all over the place and I have to spot him really closely because the fur gets into his mouth and there was one time he was almost choking. I had high expectations and ended up very disappointed .“

Does my dog need an orthopedic dog bed?

Let’s look in depth at the features on these beds that can affect your dog’s well being:

Comfort

We want our dogs to relax in comfort and it’s not always so easy to figure out how to best do that. Unfortunately, our dogs can’t use a dog bed and then give us a rating in the morning so we need to figure out some of the features and behaviors that help us pick the right bed. One of the most common factors I have seen that will cause big dogs to reject beds is too much heat retention. They tend to lay stretched out on floors or concrete to cool down. Memory foam holds a lot of heat so if your dog tends to get hot I would look at some of the cooling materials and/or put a floor fan on them.
Another big issue is firmness. Without the right amount of weight to compress it, memory foam can feel hard.

Senior dogs

These pups have a few different issues that come up. They can have a medical condition, which we’ll delve into more below. They might have some weakness which makes it hard to move around. Any of us on the older side know that sleeping on a bad mattress can really start your day off poorly.

Working dogs

Having been out on the move all day, putting down the miles, athletes really know that a good bed to sleep on makes a world of difference for good rest and quick recovery.

Medical Conditions

As our dogs live longer lives the list of medical problems has unfortunately grown with them.

Post-surgical recovery

Whether it’s back, knees, hips or shoulders (unfortunately all pretty common) there are two big reasons to pay attention to the bedding. First off, of course, you want your dog not to hurt, so padding can be a big deal. Secondly, rest speeds healing. If your dog is restless and uncomfortable they don’t heal as fast and get back to the good times.

Muscle and joint degeneration

This is an unfortunate reality for all of us as we age. Arthritic joints develop over time and muscle weakness as your dog uses the legs less because of the pain. Not only could an orthopedic dog bed be more comfortable, but if they rest better it could actually improve activity and muscle tone.

Joint and neck injuries

As discussed above, comfort leads to better rest, which leads to faster healing and improved activity. Sadly we see a lot of this in dachshunds and related types of breeds with long backs.

Hip and joint issues

This is incredibly common in large and giant breed dogs due to dysplasia. Once again the more they rest the better they do in the long run.

Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD)

This occurs along the entire spine in dogs with long backs like a basset hound but can occur in any type of dogs. The discs (cushions) between vertebrae break down and don’t support the spine properly anymore. This leads to pain and possibly paralysis which can make issues like soars on the pressure points happen without proper padding.

How to choose the right orthopedic bed for your dog? A buying guide

Every dog is an individual so here are some points you should take into consideration to make the choice.

Number 1: Orthopedic support

If it doesn’t support it’s not helping. If your dog has an injury you don’t want them to lay down in a plush bed and sink like it’s a marshmallow. That can result in uncomfortable bending and difficulty getting back out. The bed needs to have some firmness to keep the back straight and a little bit of give to allow the joints to be relieved of pressure.

Authenticity

Read carefully what the mattress is made of. There is no law stating what a manufacturer can call orthopedic. Egg crate foam gives little support but might be great for a 10 lb dog. High-density foam is not memory foam, it’s a firm non-compressible material which might add support but you don’t want it as the only material. Read the fine details here.

Durability

Our dogs will be getting on and off these beds all day long. If you buy a quality orthopedic dog bed you want it to last. There are a lot of materials, covers, mattress, liners. Pay attention to how they are made.

Water-resistant

A lot of our older dogs are going to have some urinary leaking issues. It’s important that the bed isn’t soaking up urine. Here’s a helpful piece of information rarely pointed out by manufactures for some reason. Water-resistant/proof material loses its efficacy when washed in detergent. There are special cleaning solutions that you can get at most outdoor stores that will keep the waterproof quality intact. Handwashing in these solutions is really the best way to keep your material working for you for the longest amount of time. A great additional trick if your dog has a lot of peeing issues it to use a waterproof baby crib or bed liner. Be aware though if they aren’t breathable it might make the bed hot and uncomfortable.

Extra features

Is there something that your dog particularly needs? Or will work better in your house? Are extra features just extra money for your dog? Be sure to read through what you are paying for.

Size

It’s not usually as good for a tiny dog to have a giant bed, and of course, you want your whole dog to fit on the bed. If they have legs hanging off the sides they aren’t getting the right support. Of course, unless it’s that goofy great Dane that will move to the edge, just to hang the legs off.

Budget

This is the most bang for your buck department. If you have a set price range to work with then look for a bed that has as many of the features you need and the quality to back it up.

Tips to make them last

Here are a couple of general tips to make the beds last and work for you.

  • Consider a breathable waterproof crib liner if you have a lot of urinary issues.
  • Don’t use plastic, it will make them super hot.
  • You can use a regular crib sheet over the top of the bed and just pull it off and wash it.
  • This may make the bed cover last longer.
  • Consider using a proper wash solution for all breathable waterproof materials so they continue to function.
Frequently Asked Questions

F.A.Qs

How do I get the right size bed for my dog?
One of the biggest issues here is if the bed has bolster or pillow sides. Depending on how thick they are it can really make a big difference in the amount of space your dog has to lay down.
The second answer is that it depends on if your dog sleeps curled up or stretched out how much space they need.

My dog’s a chewer, will any of these beds stand up to it?
In a word, no. All of these beds are made of cloth materials designed to have some breathability. None of them are designed to be chewed on. Unfortunately for aggressive chewing dogs sometimes no bed is the better option so they don’t end up sick from swallowing the material. A few beds advertise a more rugged cover material to make them difficult to chew, but none are impossible to chew.

Does the dog’s weight matter?
Yes. When it comes to orthopedic beds with high density foam they are designed to support the typical weight of a dog that fits the size of the bed. The basic point here is that if you get your dog a bed that is oversized for them the support may be too hard.

Our Verdict

Time to sleep on it...

My picks lean heavily toward the large and giant dogs. My reason for this is they are the ones that most need well made orthopedic dog beds. A ten-pound dog can have pressure points relieved by simpler lower density mattresses.

So my top pick for best dog orthopedic dog bed is the Big Barker bed. This bed has had the most consistent quality and durability of a thick bed designed for the big dogs while including a comfort pillow on one side. It has a cooling layer which is important to most big dogs. This gives the best of both worlds, a pillow and plenty of legroom.

The most important thing overall is to take into account your specific pet’s needs. Factors that matter are incontinence, overgrown toenails (might require sturdier material) and body type. No one bed will work for 100% of dogs, so read the details. Dogs are individuals and just like we are with our beds and pillows a well-made dog bed isn’t going to be the same best pick for every dog. Hopefully, this review gave you key points to really make the best decision and not have to mess with returns.
