Extra large dogs are extra special and they need that extra space to stretch out when they want to be comfy. They also need additional support for their joints to help with arthritic conditions that large breeds are so susceptible to as well. Memory foam or an elevated bed can help distribute your big buddy’s weight so he can feel refreshed after his nap.

After evaluating over 100 beds for extra-large dogs, I found that “A Big Barker 7″ Pillow Top Orthopedic Dog Bed” has the best overall combination of the right sizing, quality materials, comfort & orthopedic features.

But I understand that you might have different needs, whether your dog might need an orthopedic bed to support his joints or you could be searching for a particular product that fits best for your lifestyle. That is why I prepared a shortlist of the top beds for extra-Large dogs that address different needs & styles.

These beds come in all shapes, sizes, fabrics, and types so you have to know how your pooch likes to sleep, what makes him feel comfortable and safe, and whether he needs an elevated bed or special orthopedic foam. You also want to know that the bed is safe and comfortable for your pup to get the best sleep he can.

We chose our pick for the best extra large bed below but listed our top 15 choices so you can find the furfect one for you & your doggie’s needs. But first, we are going to talk about all the types of extra large beds there are and how to make sure you get the right kind and the best fit for your furry friend.

A Comfortable Dog Bed Is Essential To Your Large Dog’s Health

Great Dane is not feeling comfortable in his bed

If you have a large dog, you know it can be difficult to find a good dog bed that he can fit in comfortably. The term “Extra Large Dogs” can mean a lot of things to different people so while some manufacturers think an extra-large dog is about 50 pounds, we know that large dogs can get to over 150 pounds easily.

And even if you find a dog bed large enough for your huge hound, you also have to worry about getting one with orthopedic features like memory foam because big and giant breeds almost always suffer from joint and hip problems like arthritis and dysplasia when he gets older.

Besides worrying about your dog’s joint issues, you have to worry about his comfort as well. Rather than just finding a dog bed and choosing the largest size, make sure you get one that is truly made for large breeds. They are heavier and need more padding or it will feel like laying on the floor.

And once you find one with enough foam or stuffing, make sure it is a quality product. Many of the bargain brands are not much of a bargain because they may be 10 inches thick when you get it but flatten out to one inch after your big pup lays on it for a while. Be sure the bed you get for your fur baby is a high-quality product or you will just end up returning it and getting another.

14 Rules Of Thumb When Buying Extra Large Dog Beds

Labradoodle is resting on his parents bed and waiting for them to buy him an extra large dog bed already

Before shopping for your extra-large pup’s new bed, you have to consider a few things. For example, you have to make sure you get a bed that your dog can be comfortable in. That means getting his measurements and weight as well as looking at how he sleeps. If he likes to stretch out, you need a bed that is big enough for his length as well as the length of his legs.

You should also consider whether your dog would do best in a bolster, flat, elevated, or donut bed. Again, this depends on his sleeping habits. Don’t forget about the orthopedic features and think about how durable it is if your pooch is a digger or chewer. Then think about the breathability of the bed because your dog needs air circulation. Is the bed for indoors or outdoors and is it machine washable? You need to consider all of these things when looking at dog beds.

  • Measure your pooch: To measure your pet, use a tape measure to measure him from the tip of his nose to the base of his tail.  That is how long the bed should be.

Then measure your pooch from shoulder to shoulder at his widest point. That is the minimum width that the bed should be. You should add 6-12 inches to each of these numbers and that is the size his new bed should be. For example, if your dog is 30 inches long and 15 inches wide, you need a dog bed that is 36 to 42 inches long and 21 to 27 inches wide.

Write those measurements down and use them as a guideline when you’re shopping for a new dog bed.
  • Watch your dog sleep: The way your dog sleeps is impawtant too. If he sleeps in a ball, you do not have to worry about it but if he typically sleeps with all four legs spread out, you need to add the length of his legs into the equation.
  • Bolster versus flatbed: If your dog tends to rest his head on something when he lays down, he may appreciate a bolster bed rather than a flatbed. This is also great for preventing falls out of those elevated beds. It may not be a long drop, but it can be annoying.
  • Is an elevated dog bed right for your dog: Elevated dog beds are fantastic for senior dogs or dogs that have joint issues like arthritis and hip dysplasia. Just like we have trouble getting up off the floor, your dog may find it easier if he can just step out of bed.
  • Durability: All dogs are a bit “ruff” on their beds but big dogs can be especially tough on things. Just being large, your dog will need a bed that is durable enough to handle when he gets in and out of bed and if he is a digger or scratcher.
  • Breathability: Having a breathable material is important for all dogs to prevent body heat from building up in the bed when he lays down. This is especially impawtant for large dogs and older dogs that cannot regulate their body temperature as well and can overheat.
  • Ease Of Cleaning: washable or not / easy to vacuum?: Some people consider easy cleaning as being machine washable while others think it is easier to just vacuum it and wipe or hose the bed down. Whichever you prefer, be sure to check the cleaning instructions before purchasing.
  • Orthopedic Features: Since large dogs are more prone to joint problems, getting a bed with orthopedic features is essential. Try to find one with thick memory foam. Preferably the medical-grade gel memory foam helps with cooling too.
  • Thermal Materials: On the other hand, if you have a pooch that is cold all the time such as those dogs with very thin coats like a Great Dane, Bull Mastiff, or Bulldog, they may appreciate thermal material in their bed. These beds have an insulating material like microfleece covered with fleece or sherpa and they use your dog’s body heat to keep him warm.
  • Bed for Outdoor or Indoors: If you plan to use your dog’s bed outside, make sure it is waterproof or at least water-resistant so it can stand up to a bit of rain or snow. Also, if it will be in the sun, get one that is not going to be damaged by the UV rays.
  • Is your dog a heavy chewer? : Heavy or aggressive chewers need a super durable bed with special features to keep them from tearing it up. An elevated bed is good for that because the material is pulled tightly so he cannot get ahold of it. Also, materials like ballistic nylon, ripstop fabric, canvas, and Cordura are especially tough for your fur baby to gnaw through.
  • Waterproof fabric: If you are going to use your pooch’s bed outdoors or if he has “accidents” sometimes, getting a waterproof fabric is pretty impawtant. Vinyl, pleather, laminated cotton, and canvas are some examples of waterproof fabrics.
  • Environmentally friendly: We are all doing our best to preserve the planet for future generations so getting an environmentally friendly dog bed is a pawsitively fantastic idea. Try to find one that uses recycled materials.
  • Warranty: It is important that the manufacturer backs up their product with some kind of warranty. Even if it is only a 30-day warranty, it is good to know that a company stands behind its products enough to back it up with a warranty.
  • Made In The USA: Dog beds made in the United States have to pass rigorous tests before being allowed on the market. And if something dangerous happens to become an issue down the road, the US will typically recall it and make the company reimburse you what you paid for it.

Although it is only available in one size, the size it comes in is huge and it is quality materials so you know it will last. However, the company only offers a 30-day warranty on it, which is strange for such a durable bed. The bed is seven inches of memory foam and the pillow adds on another three inches to lay his head-on.

This bed also has a double layer of protection with a waterproof interior membrane and durable microsuede cover so it can stand up to some digging and scratching. The bottom has an anti-slip and water-resistant material to keep your pup from moving it all over the place when he jumps on and off.

What We Like:

  • It comes in three colors
  • You can machine wash the cover
  • It is waterproof

What Dogs Love about it?

This elevated dog bed also only comes in one size but will hold dogs up to 200 pounds. The material is stretched tight enough so your dog cannot get a good enough grip to chew on it but the mesh can be damaged by an aggressive chewer if he is determined enough.

The elevation and mesh make it pawfect for air circulation so your dog stays cool even in the summer. And since it can be used outside, that circulation is important. You can wash it off with a hose or remove the cover and toss it in the washing machine as well. And the height and circulation help it repel odors, bacteria, and mildew as well as insects.

What We Like:

  • It is durable for chewers
  • It is waterproof
  • It can hold pups up to 200 pounds

What Dogs Love about it?

  • The mesh and elevation keeps him cool

The Final Woof

an extra large brown dog is resting next to his owner on a large bed

The Big Barker 7-inch pillow top orthopedic dog bed is not the best fit for every dog, of course. However, after carefully evaluating more than 100 beds available on the market using the above criteria, we feel that this one is the best bed for extra-large dogs overall. Not only is it big enough to accommodate all dogs, but it is also reasonably priced.

With seven inches of memory and support foam to keep your big pooch comfy and cushioned, a four-inch bolster for a head rest, and several sizes to choose from, you get a bunch of great features for a bargain. This extra-large dog bed also has a 10-year warranty so you know the company really believes in their bed.
