Where I live, the winters can be frigid, so we rely on electric blankets to stay warm at night. Like us, our furbabies like to feel comfortable when it’s cold outside.

Whether you have a pooch that has trouble keeping warm or a senior dog, using a warming bed could help him stay comfortable. I reviewed several products on the market to help you find the best heated dog bed.

After evaluating more than 30 heated dog beds, we chose the “MARUNDA Pet Heating Pad” as our favorite heated dog bed because it features a dual-core automatic thermostat for your dog’s safety. When you power it up, it will automatically warm the pad to your pup’s ideal temperature.

But I understand that you might have different needs, whether you’re searching for a bolster-style dog bed or a self-heated bed for your dog crate. That is why I prepared a shortlist of our top heated dog beds that address different needs.

Before we look at our 12 bed reviews and top picks in various categories, let’s talk about heated beds. What are they, how do they work, and are they safe?

We’ll look at the different types of heated dog beds and their benefits. Then I’ll share some rules of thumb you can use to help you find the best product for your needs and I’ll answer some common questions from dog parents

Let’s get started.

What You Should Know About Heated Dog Beds?

A heated dog bed is a sleeping pad or mattress that’s able to generate heat to help your furbaby stay warm. Whether they’re self-warming or rely on a power source, there are various styles of warming beds.

When it comes to the power source, the primary types are electric and self-warming. Electric products need to be plugged in like your electric blanket. Self-warming options are made of a material such as mylar that can radiate or reflect your pup’s body heat back to him.  You may also find some battery-powered beds or products that you microwave to provide warmth.

Warming beds come in different styles such as bolstered beds or flat pads. There are also some extra-durable outdoor products. The key is to find the best fit for your pooch. We’ll discuss how to choose a suitable bed below.

How Can a Heated Dog Bed Help Keep Your Dog Healthy and Happy?

Not all dogs need a heated bed. But for some pooches, it can help provide needed warmth and comfort. If you live in a climate that includes cold or damp winters, this sleeping aid may be indispensable for elderly dogs, pups with orthopedic issues, puppies, or animals with thin hair coats.

Senior canines often benefit from extra TLC. Whether they suffer from hip dysplasia, joint disease, circulation issues, or another condition, a warm sleeping surface can help soothe aching joints and muscles. When looking for your elderly furbaby, choose an orthopedic option and monitor his sleeping activity. Some dogs may have trouble getting up if they become overheated.

Seniors aren’t the only dogs that may have orthopedic issues. Some dogs develop hip dysplasia or arthritis as young adults, and others may suffer an orthopedic injury such as a torn cruciate ligament. Heated pads or beds can help soothe joint pain and relax the muscles for dogs with long-term conditions. In the case of dogs recovering from an orthopedic injury, heated beds may be a useful therapy tool once the initial swelling is resolved.

Another canine category that may benefit from heated beds is dogs with short hair. In cold or damp climates, pups with a thinner coat can lose body heat easily, especially on those frigid winter nights. Using a warming bed allows your pal to snuggle in and stay toasty.

While you may not think about it, warming beds can also help some puppies. Young animals usually have more surface area than their adult counterparts. They also tend to have less developed thermoregulatory systems and can lose heat easily. A heated pad or mattress can help keep your baby warm and comfortable.

Is a Heated Dog Bed Safe?

If you’re wondering if heated beds are safe for your dog, they are as long as you follow the product instructions and know your pooch. It’s also important that you use a product made for dogs and not for humans because we have different body temperatures and heating needs than our furbabies.

Some extra precautions you can take to help keep your pal safe include:

  1. If the bed has an adjustable temperature, let it warm up and test it with your hand before letting your dog lay on it.
  2. Do not use an electric blanket option if your pup is an avid chewer.
  3. Monitor dogs with arthritis or other mobility issues when they use a heated bed. They may need help getting up and moving if they become overheated.

Powered vs. Self-Warming Beds and Blankets

A pet beagle dog sleeps on a bed under blanket. Dog background. Canine concept.

As we stated above, the two main types of available heated beds are self-warming and electric. Like the electric blanket you may use on your bed in the winter, a powered bed must be plugged into a power outlet. These products have a heating element that’s designed to warm the bed to a safe temperature for your pooch.

No power source is required for self-warming beds. They feature materials that can reflect or retain heat. Some products may have both types of materials. Regardless, these beds use your dog’s body heat to generate sustained warmth.

12 Rules of Thumb When Buying a Heated Dog Bed

No two dogs are alike. When you’re choosing a heated dog bed, you should be looking for a size and style that is safe and comfortable for your pooch. Use these guidelines to help you find the best product for your furbaby.

  • Take Your Dog’s Size and Sleeping Habits Into Account: Heated dog beds are an investment. Before you purchase one, you want to have confidence that your pup will use it. By considering your dog’s sleeping style, you can choose a product that he’ll be likely to use. Pups that curl into a tight ball may prefer a bolstered bed while dogs that stretch out are more likely to go for a flat mattress. You can even find options for pooches that like to sleep on the furniture or outside in a doghouse.

In a similar manner, you should select a product that fits your pal’s size. Wheaten terriers don’t need a bed made for Great Danes, and Irish Wolfhounds would be cramped on a dachshund’s mattress!  A properly-sized bed will help your furbaby feel more comfortable.
  • Consider Products With an Automatic Shut-off: If you want an electric pet bed, one of the features you can look for is an automatic shut-off. The heating element in this type of product will automatically shut off after a set amount of time usually ranging from 1 to 8 hours.
  • Look For No-Chew Wires: When selecting an electric-powered mattress, consider your pal’s chewing habits. If he’s notorious for chewing his blankets and other items, you should probably go with a self-warming option. But, if your dog doesn’t tend to gnaw, it’s still helpful to select a product with no-chew wires. These options tend to enclose the wires in a steel casing or similar material that’s almost impossible to chew through.
  • Check For Additional Safety Features: Other safety features that you may find helpful include an adjustable thermostat and waterproof casing. With an adjustable temperature feature, you can choose a setting that’s safe and comfortable for your pooch. Waterproof casing for the electrical cord is particularly helpful for products that you intend to use in an outside dog house.

In addition to these features, check the product before you buy it. Make sure the cords and plug show no signs of fraying or cracking. You don’t want any exposed wires.
  • Look For a Durable Product: When you invest in a heated dog bed, you want to find something that will last. Look for quality materials that can stand up to heating and wear and tear from your pup. Fabrics like polyester and fleece tend to be more durable than cotton.
  • Choose a Bed That’s Easy to Clean: For many dog owners, finding a product that’s easy to clean is important. Check to see if the bed is machine washable or easy to vacuum. Removing hair, dirt, and dander can help you keep your pooch healthy.
  • Select the Right Heating Mechanism for Your Pooch: When selecting a heated bed for your furbaby, pick one that suits your needs and preferences. If you’re not comfortable letting your pooch sleep on an electric-powered mattress or blanket, go with a self-heating option. However, beds that you plug into an outlet tend to heat better and may allow you to adjust the temperature.
  • Consider the Bed’s Location – Indoors or Outdoors: If you’re planning to use the bed for an outdoor doghouse, look for weatherproof materials. Durable products that can shed water and stand up to freezing and thawing will last longer.
  • If Your Dog Is a Heavy Chewer:  If you have a serious chewer, you should consider a self-warming dog bed. Electric bed and blanket cords or heating elements could cause electrical shocks or burns if your pal chews on them.
  • Consider Water Resistant Fabric: Water-resistant materials are useful for both outdoor and indoor use. Products that can shed moisture can help protect the heating element if your pooch has an accident. This may be most useful for geriatric pooches.
  • Check for Orthopedic Features: Orthopedic features like memory foam and thick bedding can help to support your pup’s weight and take pressure off his joints. Choosing an orthopedic product is particularly useful with older dogs and pups recovering from joint injuries.
  • Know if It’s Made In the USA: You want assurance that the product you select is safe and made under rigorous standards. The United States has quality and safety standards in place to help protect you and your pup.
  • Check the Warranty Information: Warranties can say a lot about the product’s quality.  Review the warranty information to know the conditions and length of time. You want to know if the manufacturer backs the bed.
