Having a dog bed for your best fur-iend is great but many dogs would probably love an elevated dog bed even more. Those dogs with arthritis or joint damage or those fur babies who are getting on in age could have an easier time getting into and out of bed if it was raised a few inches or more for him.

Being up off the ground is also good to help keep him cool since the air is able to circulate underneath him. He can be up off of the floor in the house and off the ground outside. No more bugs crawling all over him when he is taking his outdoor snooze.

An Elevated dog bed typically has four aluminum or plastic legs that hold it several inches from the floor. It may be made from canvas, polyester, vinyl, or a number of different materials that are soft but supportive.

After carefully reviewing more than 30 elevated beds, I found that the “Petmaker bed” is the best elevated dog bed overall.

The Petmaker bed is one of the most inexpensive elevated dog beds and comes in four sizes for dogs up to 110 pounds. It is also weather-resistant and comes with its own carrying bag. In addition, it is super-durable for even the “ruffest” scratchers.

But I understand that you might have different needs, whether you’re searching for an elevated bed for your backyard or a bed for your heavy chewer. That is why I prepared a shortlist of the top elevated dog beds that address different needs.

In the review section below we listed 16 of our favorite elevated dog beds in every group to help you narrow down your choices. But first, we will share with you the good & the bad of elevated dog beds and 12 rules of thumb of how to choose the best bed that fits best for your furbaby & you. In addition, we’ll teach you how to train your dog to go to his elevated bed and stay

Elevated Dog Beds The Good & The Bad

Depending on your pup, an elevated dog can be a lifesaver, especially for those dogs who have trouble getting up and down like we do when we get to be a certain age. And even with a thick orthopedic bed on the floor, he can still feel it after laying there for a while. However, there are always going to be pros and cons with every product so we listed them here for you to consider.

Pros

  • It has firm even support
  • Great for arthritis
  • Prevents odors
  • Keeps your dog cooler in hot weather
  • Does not put any pressure on joints
  • No stuffing for Fido to tear out
  • The stretched fabric makes it harder for pups to chew on
  • They are lighter and more portable
  • Keeps away bugs and pests

Cons

  • Some dogs just do not like them
  • You have to assemble them
  • Some beds do not come with covers
  • They do not have as many styles and colors
  • Not good for pregnant or nursing pups
  • Cheap ones can tear at the edges
  • Difficult to find for giant breeds

Are elevated dog beds chew proof?

There are no beds that are chew-proof for dogs. If your pooch wants to tear into any material, he will find a way to do it if he has enough time. However, there are several extremely durable chew-resistant elevated dog beds that most dogs just will not be able to chew through.

They may be made of rip-stop ballistic fabric, Cordura, or some other strong material. But the main thing is that the material has to be pulled tight enough so your fur baby cannot get ahold of it. And the edges should be completely inaccessible or he will tear it from the edges.

12 Rules Of Thumb When Buying an Elevated Dog Bed

For your dog’s health and comfort, you have to consider certain things when looking for the right elevated dog bed. For example, you need to get the right size and height, it should be comfortable but durable and sturdy, the material should not be made of any toxic materials, and it should not have corner holes. If you will be using it outside, it should be UV resistant and waterproof as well. It is also a good idea to make sure it is easy to assemble and clean. Then look to see if it is made in the USA and check out the warranty.

  • Size & Height: Because all dogs are not the same size, you have to make sure the bed you get comes in the right size for your pup. For example, a toy breed like a Chihuahua needs a bed about 18” x 25” but a giant breed like a Great Dane will need one that is at least 30” x 50”. And make sure it can handle his weight too. But don’t forget to make sure it is not too tall or too short either.
  • Durability: You do not want to buy something that is going to fall apart after a few days of use. Dogs are notoriously hard on their toys and beds so you have to make sure it is going to be able to handle him jumping on it and digging into it like most dogs do on a daily basis.
  • Sturdiness: Having a bed high enough off the ground to keep the bugs away is great but if it is too high it can be wobbly and not safe for your pet. You need to make sure it is sturdy enough to handle your fur baby whether he is sleeping, jumping around, or digging.
  • Material: Some materials used on dog beds are toxic and you would not even know it unless you know what to look for. In one case, antimony is a fire retardant used in bedding that can cause lung and heart problems. Here are some other dangerous materials to look out for:
    • Phthalates
    • Mercury
    • PBDE (polybrominated diphenyl ether)
    • Arsenic
    • Formaldehyde
    • Chlorine
    • Lead
    • Bromine
  • Outdoor / Indoor Purpose: If you plan to use your elevated dog bed outside as well as inside, make sure the materials it is made out of are all-weather resistant. If the frame is made of unprotected metal, for instance, it can rust and corrode, leaving your dog’s new bed useless after a few months. But also check the fabric because some are not made for the outdoors.
  • Sun-Resistant & Waterproof fabric: As stated above, if you plan to keep your dog’s bed outside, make sure it is sun-resistant and waterproof. Some fabrics will fade in the sun and may even become brittle, causing it to fall apart. Check for UV resistance and waterproof materials.
  • Avoid Corner Holes: Some of the elevated dog beds on the market have holes on the corners that can be dangerous for your pup. He can get his feet stuck in one of these holes and possibly hurt himself. Instead, try to find one that has fabric all the way around, one that has very small corner holes, or one that you can put a cover on.
  • Comfortable: Of course you want your dog’s bed to be comfortable or he will not even use it no matter how many treats you give him. You want the fabric to be stretched taut but make sure it has some give so your pooch does not feel like he is sleeping on a hard surface.
  • Ease Of Cleaning: Having a waterproof fabric and frame means you can typically just hose it down outside to clean it. Some others have material that comes off so you can toss it in the washing machine. Get what you feel is best for your situation.
  • Easy to assemble: Not everyone is Bob the Builder so make sure you get an elevated bed that does not require a college education to put together. There are plenty on the market that even come already assembled, which is even better.
  • Made In The USA: There have been many issues with products that come from China and other countries that do not have to follow the same strict regimens our USA companies have to follow. For example, they may not have quality control in many places that produce dog beds and the material may not be what you expect.
  • Warranty: Making sure the product has a good warranty is not about the money, per se. It is about whether a company feels like their products are good enough to stand behind. If they provide a warranty, you know they believe their products are worth backing up.

How To Teach A Dog To Go To Bed And Stay With an Elevated Dog Bed?

What if your dog just does not like getting on the elevated bed? You can train your pooch to go to and stay on the bed with just a few steps.

First, put his favorite mat or bed on the elevated bed and put your dog on top of that. Tell him to stay and give him a treat if he does.

Call him off the bed and then have him go back to bed on his own, giving him a dog treat once he is on the bed again. After a few times of getting treats for getting in the bed, he will be happy to do so.

After a few days, you should be able to remove his mat or bed if you want to or just leave it there.

The Final Woof

The Petmaker elevated dog bed is not furfect for all dogs, but we think it is the best elevated dog bed overall.

We reviewed over 30 elevated beds, and this one has every one of the best features for most fur babies:
It is one of the most inexpensive elevated dog beds, and comes in four sizes for dogs up to 110 pounds. It is also weather-resistant and comes with its own carrying bag. The Petmaker also comes in three fantastic colors and is durable for even the “ruffest” scratchers.
