Dog crates are invaluable to pet parents everywhere no matter what size, age, or breed of pooch you have. They are great for training purposes and, if you do it right, your pooch will consider the crate his safe place to go to when he wants to feel safe. Like a den, wolves use in the wild.

You also want your pup to be comfy while in his crate. If you have an aggressive chewer or shredder on your hands or a dog that just likes to dig into his bed with his paws, you need a crate pad that is made of a durable material that stands up to your pooch.

Even though there is no material that is 100% chew-proof, there are some beds and crate pads that are more durable to stand up to your shredder.

To help you make an informed decision, I have spent hours reviewing and making a list of the top nine indestructible dog beds for crates.

After evaluating more than 30 chew proof crate pads, I chose the “The Dog’s Bed Crate Pad” as my favorite because It is the strongest crate pad we could find and it has a friendly price. It is waterproof, has a one-year warranty, comes in different sizes, and it has a zipper hiding pocket to keep your pooch from tearing up the zipper.

But I understand you might have different needs, whether you’re looking for a chew proof crate pad that is durable or one that fits your extra-large breed. That is why I prepared a shortlist of our chew proof crate pads that address different styles & needs.

Before we dive into the review section below, we’ll help you check if your dog needs a chew proof crate pad at all? We’ll example the different types of Indestructible fibers you should look for and what criteria you should use to make the best selection for your needs

In addition, we’ll answer some common questions from dog parents, and give you some tips on how to prevent your dog from destroying his crate.

So let’s get started.

Do Your Dog Need a Chew Proof Crate Pad?

Labrador is making a funny face while laying on his crate pad inside a crate

All pups who are correctly crate-trained consider their crate to be their comfy and safe place where they can go when their pet parents are not home.

It is not intended to be a punishment or doggy jail so do not send your pooch there when he does something wrong. It is better to leave his crate door open all of the time unless you are leaving or need him to be isolated.

One of the best ways to make your fur baby’s crate comfy for them is to use padded bedding for him to cuddle up with. But if you have an extreme chewer (the Shredder), this can be a dangerous idea. That is why a chew-proof crate pad is paw-fect for your pup’s crate.

These are durable pads that are made just for your dog’s crate. They are made with pooch-safe materials that are not going to hurt him if he does happen to chew on it. However, not all of these are made equal.

The durability of a crate pad depends on your dog, actually. Because no crate pad is completely chew-proof, many of them are made of stronger materials that are more difficult for your pooch to chew on and will not harm him if he does take a bite or two.

You have to know your dog’s fur-sonality and chewing habits before looking for a pad. Let’s go over some of the reasons why dogs tear up their pads and how you can help.

There’s No Such Thing As a Real Indestructible Dog Crate Pad

No matter which crate pad you choose, you need to know that none of them are really indestructible, even if the manufacturer says it is.

Some dogs can tear through any material but you can still find pads that are more indestructible than others. Because crate pads are made of a soft material that is comfy to lay on, they are not that difficult to chew up if your dog really wants to.

The only way to stop it is to monitor him and redirect his chewing habits. And take out the bed when you are not around to supervise.

Indestructible Chew Proof Fabrics for Rough Chewers

While there is no material that is completely chew proof, there are some materials that are more able to handle your dog’s chewing habits. Some of these include ballistic nylon, durable canvas, dropcloth, heavy denim, and ripstop fabric.

Ballistic Nylon: This is a fabric used by the military to protect them from ballistic impact (bullets and metal fragments). It is basket-weaved, which makes it incredibly durable and can stand up to very aggressive chewers. It is usually only found in black or other dark colors because it is resistant to dye as well.

Durable Canvas: This material is the same thing they use to make painter’s drop cloths out of because they are so strong and rip-resistant. You can get a bed made from the material or use it as a cover for a bed made of a dif-fur-ent material. It is strong enough for moderate chewers but not The Shredder.

Heavy Denim: Just like durable canvas drop cloths, heavy denim is not indestructible but it is pretty close. In fact, this is why they make blue jeans out of heavy denim to withstand wear and tear when working or playing “ruff.” This material will stand up to digging and moderate chewing.

Ripstop Fabric: Ripstop fabric is made from polyester or nylon that is woven with yarn to reinforce it. That makes it especially difficult for your pooch to tear up. It usually comes in different materials and you can even find it made with ballistic nylon for an even tougher material.

14 Rules Of Thumb When Buying a Chew Proof Crate Pad:

2 Boxers sharing a crate together

When choosing a chew-proof crate pad, you have to consider many things because this is a big decision that can change the way your pooch acts in the crate. For example, you have to have the right crate size, make sure the pad is safe and durable, look for hidden zippers or loose threads, consider a waterproof liner, get one that is easily washable, and look for a good warranty.

  • Your Dog’s Size: If your dog is too big for his crate, he is more likely to tear up anything and everything you put in there. Your dog will take his frustration and anxiety out on the crate pad if he feels trapped or uncomfortable. So, make sure the crate and the pad are the correct size for your dog.
  • Crate Size: Your dog’s crate size should be 3 to 5 inches taller and longer than he is. This means if your pup is 18 inches long and 12 inches tall, you should get a crate that is at least 21 inches long and 15 inches high. Then, make sure the bedding fills the length and width of the crate for a perfect fit. But do not forget to add the pad thickness. If it is one inch thick, add an inch to the height of your crate.
  • Durability, Dog-Safe Material: No matter what size, age, or breed of dog you have, the material has to be safe and durable. Most of the crate pads on the market are made with polyester and cotton but some are made with fillers that can be dangerous if your dog swallows it. Always check all of the materials in the crate pad before using it.
  • Construction: Be sure that the crate pad is built for wear and tear. Some of the cheaper brands may look good but have loose threads or seams that can be pulled out easily. All it takes is one loose thread for your dog to tear up the whole crate pad.
  • Orthopedic Features: Some crate pads have supportive features that will help your pooch stay comfy while he is in his crate. These limit the amount of pressure on certain areas of the body like the joints so your dog’s weight is distributed evenly.
  • Stuffing & Comfort: Most dog crate pads are stuffed with some kind of polyester fiber to keep your pup comfy. If your dog likes to stretch out, make sure the bedding is comfortable all the way to the edges. The bed shape is im-paw-tant as well so learn how your dog likes to sleep and then choose the right one.
  • Reinforced Seams: Any kind of crate pad or bedding you choose needs to have reinforced seams. Dogs are “ruff” on their bedding so make sure the seams can hold up to his mischievousness. You do not want a crate pad that is going to fall apart the first time you use it.
  • Hidden Zippers: Always look for hidden zippers because your dog will find it even if you don’t. And once he finds that zipper, he will be sure to get it open so he can see what is inside. This will lead to a cage full of stuffing when you get home and the need for a new crate pad.
  • Waterproof Lining: Some dog crate pads have a waterproof layer under the cover. These are excellent for puppies and older dogs that may have accidents. However, many of these are not as chew-resistant as the ones without waterproof linings so you have to consider that when buying.
  • Odor Resistant: Of course, you do not want your dog’s crate pad to smell funky. Let’s face it, our dogs can be little stinkers sometimes and their bedding is liable to absorb those smells so having an odor-resistant crate pad is pawesome.
  • Ease Of Cleaning & Machine Washable: Even if you have an odor-resistant pad with a waterproof lining, it is still going to need to be cleaned often. The easiest way to clean a dog bed is to toss it in the washing machine so try to find one that is machine-washable.
  • Eco-friendliness: Being “green” is the way to go nowadays since we are all trying to live responsibly. There are some dog crate pads and beds made with eco-friendly filling like shredded plastic bottles. You would be surprised how comfortable these really are.
Warranty:  No matter what kind of dog crate pad you get, make sure it has a warranty. The longer the better. Because if a company is willing to stand behind its product with a long warranty, it must be made well.
  • Made In The USA: Products made in the United States have to pass many strict laws and rules before they can go on the market. This does not mean that all products made outside the USA are not safe, but they do not have to follow the same set of regulations.

Common Questions From Dog Parents

Husky is laying in a funny pose inside his crate

What can I put in my dog’s crate that he won’t chew?

A dog that is an aggressive chewer will chew anything you put in front of him. Although there are some things he may not like to chew as much as others, nothing is safe from a Shredder. Take the time to train your pooch not to chew on the wrong things by only giving him things he is supposed to chew on, like chew toys.

What material can dogs not chew through?

No matter what material you put in front of your pooch, if he is an aggressive chewer, he can chew through it eventually. However, there are some materials that are almost im-paw-sible for him to chew through. These include durable natural rubber, nylon, or firehose material.

Should you cover a dog crate with a blanket?

If you have a dog that is anxious or searches for dark enclosed places when he is scared, a cover on his crate can make him feel safer. It helps block out the noise and distractions from outside the crate that may be irritating him and gives him a sense of security.

Should I put a dog bed in the crate?

Because crates are made of hard material like hard plastic or metal, it is important to put something comfy in there for him to lay on. Rather than a dog bed, choose a crate pad or bed made especially for crates.

Should I put a pee pad in my puppy’s crate?

Never put a pee pad in your puppy’s crate. The crate is his den (like our bedroom) and you do not want to teach him to pee where he sleeps. That is like putting a toilet in your bed. Train your puppy to let you know when he has to go using positive reinforcement.

Is it cruel to crate a dog while at work?

Because your dog’s crate is his safe space or den, he should enjoy being in there. Keeping him in there while you are at work is not cruel unless he absolutely hates it or if it is too small for him. Avoid crating your dog for more than five hours at a time with the exception of nighttime. And the frequency of these times should be minimal. Just make sure to let him out and give him plenty of attention and exercise when you are home.

When should you stop using a dog crate?

You can use a dog crate for your pooch for as long as he likes it. If you use it for training purposes, you can go ahead and leave the door open when you are done with training so he can come and go as he pleases. Most dogs enjoy having their own safe space to go to when they need it.

If you are crating your pup for housetraining, it is impawtant to set a deadline of about eight weeks from their last “indoor accident.” In other words, if your fur baby has not soiled inside his crate or home for eight weeks, you can start weaning him off the crate.

A Few Words about Heavy Chewers, They Aren’t Bad Dogs

cute Jack Russell puppy is standing in his crate

All dogs like to chew on things, not because they are bad dogs but because it is a natural instinct for them. In the wild, dogs (as wolves) had to chew things to keep their teeth sharp and to clean their teeth. It was also a way to satisfy their hunger when they could not find anything to eat. Back then, they did not have puppy parents to provide them bowls of kibble.

Puppies
Puppies chew to explore their world because this is the only way they know how to understand the world around them, just like babies and toddlers. They also do it to relieve their teething pain when their adult teeth start coming in. And of course, they chew because it is fun.

Split the text into paragraphs, and give subheadings, so it would be easier to read.

Adult Dogs
Once they get past puppy stage, that does not mean their urge to chew goes away. It is still a natural instinct for any dog no matter how old they are. Some chew when they are bored, others have separation anxiety, and some dogs do it if they have a medical issue like gastrointestinal problems or pica, which is the urge to eat non-food items.

Only Part of the Solution
Getting a chew-proof crate pad is good to help keep your dog from tearing up his bedding but no crate pad is completely indestructible, especially for extreme chewers. The durable pad is only part of the solution. You still need to try to help curb your pup’s chewing behavior with chew toys and other methods.

Chew Toys Can Help
Chew toys are great to help keep your pooch occupied as well as providing him with a way to help with teething pain, dental hygiene, and anxiety. It can also help prevent your dog from chewing on things he is not supposed to, like his crate pad. Toss a safe and durable chew toy in with your pooch and he may leave his pad alone. In our review of indestructible dog toys, we found that one of the best is the Kong Extreme that you can put treats inside of.

Some Dog Breeds Chew More Than Others
Certain dog breeds are more apt to destructive chewing than others. Some are retrievers who are used to having something in their mouth while others are just prone to nibbling no matter what you do. It may be a built-in trait or something they learned as a newborn from their mother or siblings. Some of the chewiest dog breeds include:

  • Beagles
  • Retrievers
  • Chihuahuas
  • Terriers
  • Dachshunds
  • Collies

Some Final Tips to Prevent Destructive Chewing
There are just some dogs that are going to chew whatever they find no matter what you do. Those are the shredders. In these cases, it is im-paw-tant that you take certain steps to protect your pup as well as his and your belongings. For example:

  • Do not leave things lying around on the floor where he can get them
  • Provide him with one or two quality chew toys that he loves
  • Spend extra time with your pooch playing together
  • Use puzzle toys or feeders for him to enjoy

Expert Tip: How Do I Stop My Dog from Destroying His Crate?

Pawsitive reinforcement is a great way to stop your dog’s destructive chewing. Rather than punishing your dog by taking away his crate pad, why not try positive reinforcement?

Providing your pooch with a positive reward when he does something you approve of is typically more effective. For example, when your pup chews on his chew toys or bones rather than the crate pad, give him praise and/or a treat. Other things that can help include:

  • Making sure your fur baby is getting enough exercise.
  • Do not take him out when he is destroying his crate. Wait until he is calm or else he will think that tearing up the crate pad is the way to get out.
  • Keep one or two of his favorite toys or blankets in the crate.
  • Leave the crate door open when you are home.
  • Make sure his crate is the right size for him.
  • Do not use the crate as punishment.
  • Reward your pooch for going in the crate on his own.
  • Enroll your fur baby in crate training classes.

The Final Woof

The Dog’s Bed Crate Pade is the best chew proof crate pad on the list in our opinion. It is the strongest crate pad we could find and it is affordable as well.

It is waterproof, has a one-year warranty, comes in different sizes, and it has a zipper hiding pocket to keep your pooch from tearing up the zipper. In fact, the only negative thing we could find was that it only comes in one color, and that is no big deal.
